Vehicle Inspections

All vehicles with out-of-state titles, salvage or non-highway titles must be inspected prior to being registered in the State of Kansas.

Out-of-State Vehicles

Vehicles registering from out-of-state to Kansas need the following information:

If no lien on title to vehicle:

  • $20 Cash Fee
  • Current proof of insurance on vehicle 
  • Original Title only (copies are not accepted) 
  • Valid Driver's License (Kansas DL not required) 

Lien holder occupies title or is holding title:

  • Customer must contact lien holder and request  the original title be mailed to the Jackson County Treasurer's Office, 400 New York Ave., Rm 206, Holton, KS 66436. No other copies will be accepted.
  • Out of state individuals moving into Kansas who do not have a paper title due to a lien CAN get a 60-day temporary permit. We will need the out-of-state registration receipt and proof of valid insurance on the vehicle. The paper title will need to be submitted to Kansas before customer can register for a license plate and Kansas title.
  • Power of Attorney may be required of lien holder if customer's name does not appear as owner with lien holder on title.

The Sheriff's Office will only accept exact cash payment

Any title branded rebuilt salvage, prior salvage, salvage, and non-highway, Kansas or out-of-state, must be inspected at a Kansas Highway Patrol office.
